Adults-Only

Only nine of the 16 resorts on this page are adults-only across the whole island. Two more accept children from about 8, and five are family resorts with an adults-only pool or zone. For a stay without children, the strict list is Centara Ras Fushi, OBLU SELECT Lobigili, Adaaran Prestige Vadoo and Anantara Veli near Malé, You & Me in Raa, Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa in Meemu, Drift Thelu Veliga in South Ari, and Mercure Kooddoo and ROBINSON Maldives in Gaafu Alifu. The 16 average 9.3 out of 10 across 4,870 guest reviews. The age line moves from island to island. Centara Ras Fushi states on its own site that only guests over 18 are permitted; Anantara Veli, Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, adults-only since November 2023, use the same threshold. Elsewhere sources disagree: You & Me and Mercure Kooddoo appear as 16+ on some lists and 18+ on booking platforms, and Lobigili shows 18 at check-in while a tour operator writes 16. With a 16 or 17-year-old, get the age in writing first. Lobigili's own FAQ also requires two adults per villa: no solo bookings. Distance from the airport splits the strict list in two. Lobigili, in North Malé Atoll, says its speedboat takes about 15 minutes and runs around the clock, timed to flights. Vadoo, in South Malé, is also about 15 minutes away, Centara Ras Fushi about 20 and Anantara Veli 30 to 35. Boats run after dark, so an evening landing still reaches the island that night; Vadoo wants flight details 72 hours ahead and advises an overnight stop in Malé or Hulhumalé for arrivals after midnight. For a short honeymoon, I would pick one of these four. The other strict resorts need a seaplane or a domestic flight. You & Me is about 45 minutes by seaplane to Raa, and seaplanes fly in daylight only, roughly from 6 am to between 3.30 and 4 pm: land in the evening and you sleep in Malé or Hulhumalé. Mercure Kooddoo sits next to Kooddoo's domestic airport, about 55 minutes' flight and then a few minutes by buggy, though connections can stretch the trip to around four hours. ROBINSON Maldives, also in Gaafu Alifu, needs that flight and then a speedboat. Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa in Meemu Atoll became a five-star adults-only island in November 2025, a change announced with new restaurants; older guides describing a family main island and an adults-only Platinum Island are out of date. It is reached by seaplane, or by a speedboat run that one listing puts at over two hours. All-inclusive is the norm on the strict list: Centara Ras Fushi, Lobigili, Vadoo, You & Me, Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa, Mercure Kooddoo and ROBINSON Maldives all sell it. Privacy depends on the villa. Centara Ras Fushi has 140 villas, 110 of them over water, according to its factsheet: 40 overwater villas face the sunset, the 20 Deluxe Spa Overwater Villas add an outdoor spa bath, and none has a private pool. Anantara Veli is built mostly over the lagoon: the Over Water Villas sit above a coral bed, the Superior ones line the outer edge, and only the Ocean Pool and Deluxe Over Water Pool Villas, the latter with a 6 m infinity pool, have private pools. Lobigili's villas stand over the lagoon; its August 2025 brochure lists 22 SunNest Water Pool Villas, each with an 8 m² private pool, and 22 Nest Water Villas without one. You & Me mixes beach suites with private pools and overwater Aqua Suites whose decks face the sunrise and open onto the lagoon; all ten Aqua Suites, and the You & Me Suite, were refitted in 2023 with a slide from the terrace into the lagoon. Meals there are à la carte, with no buffet. For a private pool over water, I would choose Lobigili or Anantara Veli. For snorkelling from the beach, my pick of the strict list is Drift Thelu Veliga, a 4-star island at Dhangethi in South Ari, about 35 minutes by seaplane: its house reef starts about 50 metres from the beach and it runs a PADI 5-Star dive centre. Whale sharks are a boat excursion, not a house reef sighting: South Ari has them all year, never guaranteed on a given day. You & Me suits divers more than reef snorkellers: Emperor Divers runs its centre from the arrival jetty, with dhoni trips to channels and thilas. Drift Thelu Veliga is listed as 18+ by a tour operator. Baros and Milaidhoo, on the other hand, are often called adults-only, but both take children from about 8: Baros turns away under-8s, and listings for Milaidhoo give 8 or 9. Neither offers cots, which says who they are built for. Milaidhoo is in Baa Atoll, whose UNESCO biosphere reserve includes Hanifaru Bay, where mantas gather roughly from May to November, a bay open to snorkellers only. Five resorts on this page are family resorts with an adults-only corner, not adults-only islands. OBLU SELECT Sangeli keeps One Banyan Island for adults from sunrise to sunset. Le Méridien Maldives in Lhaviyani runs a Family and Kids' Hub and keeps a separate adults-only pool. InterContinental Maamunagau in Raa runs its Planet Trekkers club for ages 4 to 12 and has an adults-only area, The Retreat, with an infinity pool. Atmosphere Kanifushi and Sun Siyam Iru Fushi both run kids' clubs. Book them for a quiet pool, not a quiet island. My verdict: for a honeymoon after a long-haul flight I would book Centara Ras Fushi, the most reviewed resort here with 910 reviews, or Anantara Veli: 18+ confirmed, and a boat that runs after dark. OBLU SELECT Lobigili scores highest of the strict nine, 9.6 from 399 reviews. For a week of snorkelling I would go to Drift Thelu Veliga. This list is wrong for a family whose 16-year-old has no written confirmation, and the five family resorts are wrong for anyone who wants no children at breakfast. Coral and shells stay in the lagoon: taking them home is illegal.

All-Inclusive

On a Maldives resort island there is nowhere else to eat or drink, so the board plan decides your bill more than the villa does. This page gathers 40 all-inclusive resorts, with an average guest rating of 9.3 across 12,756 reviews, from the Malé atolls to Haa Alifu in the far north and Gaafu Alifu in the south. Before comparing them, I read what each plan leaves out. "Premium", "Luxury" and "Deluxe" in a resort's name tell you nothing on their own: only the list of exclusions on the resort's own page says which restaurants, drinks and excursions stay outside the plan. The plans are not equal. Atmosphere Kanifushi in Lhaviyani, rated 9.4 across 383 reviews, limits fine dining on the Kanifushi Plan as currently sold: one à la carte meal at The Sunset or Pier Six, for stays of four nights or more and booked ahead, and it adds a 45-minute spa treatment per adult for every four nights. Sun Siyam runs a 24-hour all-inclusive across its five Maldives resorts; here, Sun Siyam Vilu Reef (9.2, 560 reviews) and Sun Siyam Iru Veli (9.3, 366) in Dhaalu sell it as a dine-around. I check three exclusions every time: signature restaurants, premium wines and spirits, and excursions or diving. Some islands come in pairs, which doubles what the plan covers. OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi, the most reviewed resort here at 1,921 reviews and rated 9.1, is about 15 minutes from Velana by speedboat and joined by a 270-metre jetty to OBLU SELECT Lobigili, its adults-only neighbour (9.6, 399 reviews). The same brand has two more islands on this page in North Malé: OBLU SELECT Sangeli (9.4, 743 reviews) and OBLU NATURE Helengeli (9.1, 400). In Dhaalu, Riu Palace Maldivas (9.1) is linked by a walkway to Riu Atoll (9.2), and Palace guests can use the bars and restaurants of Riu Atoll. North Malé is the speedboat zone. The dusitD2 Feydhoo Maldives (9.4, 199 reviews) is about seven minutes from the airport by boat, according to Dusit. Centara Ras Fushi (8.9, 910 reviews) is about 15 minutes out and takes adults only, from 18. VARU by Atmosphere (9.4, 683 reviews) is about 40 minutes away, with the boat included in its plan. Oaga Art Resort (9.2, 266 reviews), Taj Coral Reef (8.8, 185) and Adaaran Select Huduran Fushi (8.3, 164), which gives its boat ride as 30 minutes, complete the atoll. Joy Island (9.6, 120 reviews) is also a short boat ride from the airport. South Malé suits families. OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, rated 9.2 across 180 reviews, is about 45 minutes by speedboat and runs the OZEN Kids Club; children under four must stay with a parent or babysitter. Adaaran Club Rannalhi (8.8, 240 reviews) gives its own speedboat time as 45 minutes. Adaaran Prestige Vadoo (8.9, 411), about 15 minutes out, is adults-only, and OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI (9.2, 83) is the brand's other island in this atoll. Further south-west, in Ari, Lily Beach Resort and Spa (9.3, 238 reviews) runs the Turtle Kids Club for children aged 3 to 12, a clear family pick. With real review volume, Raa and Ari hold the top ratings. Both Emerald resorts in Raa score 9.9: Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa across 538 reviews and Emerald Faarufushi across 200, and Constance Moofushi in Ari matches them across 301. In Raa, Cora Cora Maldives (9.6, 61 reviews), Heritance Aarah (9.5, 63; 40 minutes by seaplane, in its own words), Niva Dhigali (9.4, 192) and RAAYA By Atmosphere (9.2, 296) follow. Two Raa resorts take adults only: You & Me Maldives (9.5, 182 reviews) and Adaaran Prestige Water Villas (9.4, 33). In Ari, OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru reaches 9.6 across 68 reviews; in Dhaalu, Baglioni Resort Maldives scores 9.7 across 41. Lhaviyani adds two small, top-rated islands: Cocoon Maldives (9.6, 154 reviews) and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, the only resort here rated 10, on just 14 reviews. Siyam World on Dhigurah, Noonu Atoll (9.4, 651 reviews), is roughly 40 minutes by seaplane according to Sun Siyam, which flies its guests between 06:00 and 16:00, and has a floating water park. ROBINSON NOONU, in the same atoll, has only 11 reviews so far, rated 8.3. Meemu's Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa (9.2, 604 reviews) is adults-only and reached by domestic flight. The far ends of the country need a domestic flight. JA Manafaru in Haa Alifu, rated 9.6 across 192 reviews, is about 55 minutes by air to Hanimaadhoo and then about 35 to 40 minutes by speedboat, or around 70 minutes by seaplane from Velana. Hondaafushi Island Resort in Haa Dhaalu (7.8, 60 reviews) uses the same Hanimaadhoo flight and a short boat ride. In the south, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo (8.8, 46 reviews), adults-only, sits next to Kooddoo airport, about an hour's flight from Malé, and a buggy takes you from the runway to your room. The transfer and the season change the value of the plan. Trans Maldivian Airways seaplanes fly only in daylight, with 20 kg of checked bags and 5 kg in the cabin per passenger, so an evening landing means sleeping near the airport first. The Maldives Meteorological Service counts January to March as the northeast monsoon, the driest stretch, with December and April as transition months, and the southwest monsoon from mid-May to November brings wind, rain and rougher crossings. On a wet southwest-monsoon week far from Malé, when you spend more hours at the bar and the table, is when all-inclusive matters most. Two state charges apply to every resort night whatever the plan: the green tax, collected for each guest on each night under the rules of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, and the tourism goods and services tax, so I look for both lines on any quote before comparing two resorts. On an inhabited island, alcohol stays off the table outside resorts and safari boats, so the drinks list ends at the resort jetty. With children, I would book Lily Beach, whose Turtle Kids Club takes ages 3 to 12, or OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, 45 minutes by boat; for a couple, You & Me or OBLU SELECT Lobigili, both adults-only; for five nights or more on a remote atoll, all-inclusive every time. For two or three nights, stay near Malé on half board if you drink little: the drinks and excursions in the plan go unused, and a remote atoll's seaplane or domestic transfer would eat too much of so short a stay.

Beach Villa

A beach villa in the Maldives is a standalone villa set on the sand, with its own path to the beach and the lagoon, more shade and more garden than a villa on stilts. It is the safer pick with toddlers, because there is no deck dropping into deep water. This page gathers nine stays on eight islands: seven resorts, one listed twice (Angsana Velavaru and its InOcean villas), and one guesthouse, from North and South Malé Atoll, 20 to 50 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport, to Dhaalu by seaplane and the far north and south by domestic flight. I choose by the reef in front of the villa. Overwater or beach villa? On stilts you step off the deck into the lagoon, but the deck has little shade and passing boats can see you. On the beach you get palms, an outdoor shower and a beach that feels yours, with the sandflies and mosquitoes that come with vegetation. Orientation matters more than the brochure admits: west-facing villas get the sunset, and the side facing the monsoon wind gets the chop, the northeast from December to April, the southwest from May to November. I ask for the sheltered side of the island for my dates. For snorkelling straight from the sand, two resorts stand out. Dhawa Ihuru, a small North Malé island 20 to 25 minutes by speedboat, has 45 villas and all of them are on the beach: there are no water villas at all. Its house reef rings the island, a full lap takes about 90 minutes, and the Ranamaari wreck lies just offshore. Embudu Village, on the northern edge of South Malé Atoll and 20 minutes from the airport, has garden and beach bungalows a few steps from a reef reachable from the beach, with the Diverland dive centre on site. Recent reviews call Embudu's rooms dated; they praise the reef. If space is the point, One&Only Reethi Rah is the extreme: 12 beaches along roughly 6 km of coastline, most of its villas on the sand, and the top guest score on this page, 9.8. The boat ride takes 45 to 50 minutes. Huvafen Fushi, a small North Malé island of 46 villas, gives every villa its own pool, and its deluxe beach bungalow has two, one facing the lagoon and one in a walled courtyard. Adaaran Club Rannalhi, all-inclusive at the southern tip of South Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat, puts most of its rooms on the beach, with a reef around the island. Two resorts need a flight. Angsana Velavaru in Dhaalu Atoll is about 45 minutes by seaplane, and seaplanes only fly in daylight: if your international flight lands after about 3 to 3.30 pm, expect to sleep in Hulhumalé first. Book a room on the main island for a beach villa; the InOcean villas are a separate cluster on stilts about 1 km offshore, reached by boat. Mercure Maldives Kooddoo, adults only and all-inclusive in Gaafu Alifu, sits next to Kooddoo airport, about an hour by domestic plane, which flies later than seaplanes. Of its 25 beach villas, 20 have a private pool. Araaik Beach Village is a different trip. It is a ten-room guesthouse on Hoarafushi, an inhabited island in Haa Alifu, the northernmost atoll, reached by domestic flight to Hoarafushi's own airport. You get rooms facing a private beach rather than a villa, and local island rules: no alcohol, clothes covering shoulders and knees away from the beach, a quieter Friday. It has a single guest review so far, against an average score of 9.1 across 1,712 reviews for the nine stays on this page, so I treat it as a base for island life, not a resort stay. My verdict: a beach villa is right for families with young children, for anyone who wants shade and a garden, and for couples who value a door onto the sand over the view through a glass floor. It is wrong if the whole point of the trip is stepping off your deck into the water at sunrise. For snorkellers I would book Dhawa Ihuru; for honeymoon privacy, Huvafen Fushi or Reethi Rah; for an all-inclusive with a short transfer, Rannalhi. Whichever you pick, coral and shells stay on the island: taking them home is illegal.

Couples Retreat

For a couples retreat in the Maldives, I check three things before the spa menu: an adults-only island or zone, a villa facing the side you want, and a transfer that does not swallow your first day. No resort appears under this heading on Stays in Maldives yet, so this page explains how to choose and where to look instead. 16 resorts on the site court couples who want adult calm, from whole adults-only islands to resorts that keep an adults-only pool or zone or admit only older children; 44 have overwater villas and 51 a private pool villa. Adults-only does not mean the same thing everywhere. Centara Ras Fushi, in North Malé Atoll, states that only guests over 18 are permitted on the island. InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau, in Raa Atoll, is a family resort, but its Retreat is an adults-only enclave with its own infinity pool and bar: children are on the island, just not at your pool. If quiet at breakfast matters most, I would take a whole adults-only island. If you want a bigger resort's restaurants and reef, the zone is the better trade. Privacy comes down to how many neighbours share your island. Milaidhoo, in Baa Atoll, keeps 50 villas on one island, each with its own pool: 29 over the lagoon, 18 on the beach and three residences. Choosing between those two rows is the real privacy decision. An overwater villa sits on a jetty that every neighbour walks along to reach their door; a beach villa opens straight onto sand. I would take the beach side for quiet and the lagoon side for the view and the swim from the deck. The transfer decides your first evening. Trans Maldivian Airways flies its seaplanes only from sunrise to sunset and asks guests to land at Velana airport by 15:30 to connect the same day; land later and you sleep in Malé or Hulhumalé. Its standard allowance is 25 kg per person, 20 kg in the hold and 5 kg in the cabin, which rules out two large suitcases each. For a long weekend, I would pick North or South Malé Atoll, where the crossing is by the resort's speedboat rather than by seaplane. Honeymoon perks come with paperwork. Centara Ras Fushi grants its honeymoon benefits only to couples travelling within 12 months of their wedding date, asks for a valid certificate at booking and a copy at check-in, and limits the offer to bookings made on its own website. Other resorts set their own window, so an anniversary trip rarely qualifies. Keep a scan of the certificate on your phone: it is the document the front desk asks for, and the one couples forget at home. Season changes the mood more than the resort does. The Maldives Meteorological Service places the dry northeast monsoon from January to March and the wetter southwest monsoon from mid-May to November, with December and April as transition months. For dinners on the deck at sunset, ask for a west-facing overwater villa; the east side gets the sunrise. I would not send couples who want nightlife: evenings end at the resort bar, and the inhabited local islands serve no alcohol outside resorts and boats.
